Sudan Does Not Withdraw from Abyei

The Sudanese refused to withdraw their troops along the Abyei border region as they had previously promised. This prevented southern residents from returning back to the South. A Sudanese government official claimed the troops would withdraw when most of UNISFA has deployed. It’s also the second time the Sudanese government did not attend The Abyei Joint oversight committee meeting. Because Sudan chose not to attend the meeting suggests Sudan does not wish to remove its forces from the Abyei region. The Sudanese government is doing everything in its power to ensure that the AJOC does not allow the Abyei residents to return to the south. The Ngok Dinka people used to live in the Abyei region until the Sudanese conquered the region. Many of the Dinka fled south to escape the Sudanese army and the Arab nomads moved in with the Sudanese army in Abyei.
