South Sudan national disarmamant campaign

South Sudan has launched its official Disarmament Demobilization and Reintegration strategic plan after moving to remove 150,000 combatants from the rebel group turned state military the SPLA. William Deng Deng, Chairman of the new disarmament plan said that over half of this reduction would be in direct military personnel while the remained would be in various forces that go towards polices, jails, and other security services. He insisted that the program would take up to 6 to 8 years to complete, starting in 2012 with the reintegration of ex-soldiers into civilian communities.
Although it was denied that there were still child soldiers present within the SPLA Deng Deng admitted that there might be "negligible numbers of child soldiers in the SPLA". He explained their presence in the barracks and camps thusly: "[they] do not have anything to do in the community [sometimes] come and hang out in the barracks. They play football and find food there”.
