Croatia Elects New President

Ivo Josipovic was elected today as Croatia new President. The Social Democrat was expected to win, but his victory was by a wider margin than earlier polls predicted. Josipovic won with 60.3% of the vote in a run-off election against the mayor of Zagreb. He has vowed to fight corruption and continue with the process to join the European Union. In his victory speech sunday night, Josipovic stated "This is a victory which we can all celebrate because it is my deep belief that all of us want a better and more just Croatia."

His opponent Milan Bandic faced allegation of corruption. Josipovic has vowed to fight corruption, which is needed in order for European Union officials to accept the application of Croatia. While he has been criticized for lacking charisma, he will be able to work well with both European Union and Croatian officials, despite that he has little role in policy making.

This election had a low voter turnout at 50.3%, largely because of the lack of enthusiasm for the election, in part because of widespread corruption in the Government.
